For the last ten years, I've always bought refurbished computers from Dell's outlet and never had a problem. Here's a great piece from the NYT on why refurb is making a debut. There are a few facts here I didn't know, like NEC makes a monitor with corn-based plastic, and New Hampshire and Minnesota have now restricted throwing monitors into the trash.
